No.2 David Friedman @davidfriedmanstudio
Friedman draws with barbers clippers and a rotary tool to excavate images within the patterns of a cowhide. He projects his own stories onto a surface, loaded with its own history - skin to skin.

Big Babies is an installation developed in 2021 in an artist residency on Governors Island offered by 4heads.org. Painted on kosher Kraft paper with acrylics and based on vintage dolls from my own collection, it addresses the question of how children turn into violent adults.

The Fanatic Voyage collaboration painting was born in the basement, migrated from apt to apt making brazen pit stops, and was bombed on the streets of the L.E.S. It is a time capsule of a long hot summer punctuated by the sound of jackhammers and collapsing buildings.

This piece, Found was inspired from children’s toys, especially Precious Moments figurines.
For me they are the ultimate symbol of kitsch. Many of them have religious themes, but at the same time depict children as pseudo-sexualized objects. In this series I was very inspired by artifacts of cultures like the Olmec. This work is a faux artifact from a society with little questionable substance.

Alien Bloom - a fictional garden, is a post-industrial landscape, populated with sculptural Alien shaped flora, constructed from disposable plastic containers . It is a space for an ontological celebration, that represents the transformation of the crude excrement of society--objects otherwise harmful to the ecology crafted into an endless aesthetic exploration.

My work was born out of anger at the Russian aggression against Ukraine. It is dedicated to Ukrainian artists who had to give up their previous work and are now defending their families and homeland. Art cannot be neutral and indifferent to evil.

Cornucopia is part of a series of paintings where the substrate is an integral part of the painting exposing different areas of experience: Life’s emotional vitality, materiality and the luminosity of Spirit.
