About: The Clemente works with high school, undergraduate, and graduate students from a wide range of majors and experiences. We have partnered with schools to bring high impact internships, providing a collaborative and supportive learning environment.

Special Project Intern

The Clemente is looking for an intern to assist with research and writing for a digital platform that will use oral history, mapping, archival footage, and new video to explore the centrality of Latinx art and activism in forming New York.

Skills needed: Intern must have strong writing skills and experience in research and searching archives. Please email a short statement of interest and any relevant experience to Sally Szwed and Sofia Reeser del Rio, sszwed@theclementecenter.org and sreeserdelrio@theclementecenter.org

Artist Assistant Interns

Work alongside resident artists on a variety of projects and tasks within an artist studio.
Skills needed: Interest in hands-on working, could include painting, drawing, organizing, getting to know how artists work, interest in contemporary art.

Summer 2024 INTERN

  • Nico Markham, Studio Program Intern

    Nico is a rising senior at Skidmore College in Upstate New York, passionate about applying his interdisciplinary and multicultural background to community arts initiatives in NYC. As a Manhattan native, he grew up visiting its many museums and art centers, taking part in their youth art programs. His majors in Spanish cultural studies and economics enable him to study Latin America, particularly Chile, where his mother is from and extended family resides.

    “As an upcoming graduate at Queens College, I am majoring in Urban Studies and minoring in Fashion and Textiles. I’m truly passionate about social justice and equity, as well as ethical and sustainable fashion.”

  • Leshea Smith, Artist Assistant Intern

    “I’m a senior in high school. I make mainly digital art and animations, and what motivates me as an artist is an emotional drive. To express a powerful feeling through creativity and have others relate and bond over it fuels me as an artist.”

    “I am a senior at Williamsburg High School of Arts and Technology. I am passionate about art and its capacity to impact others and have a positive outlook on life. Besides drawing, I enjoy reading and crocheting.”

  • Kaori Wong, Development Intern

    “I am graduating this year from Williamsburg HS of Art and Technology, and my passion is art. I like to create, solve puzzles, and read while listening to music. My dream is to be an art teacher by day and a comic artist by night.”

Volunteer

The Clemente seeks volunteers to greet and assist guests during our programs and to interact and engage with our community.   We offer a range of opportunities, from helping at special events to aiding teaching artists at art workshops, and assisting staff in The Clemente office. Benefits of volunteering with us include:

  • Networking and socializing

  • Helping to promote Latinx art, art education, and other community events

  • Learning from a fast-paced cultural and community center, and collaborating on art projects

  • Fostering civic engagement and creative expression among program participants

  • Building a sense of community in the Lower East Side / Loisaida neighborhood

Before you start, we will offer orientation of basic knowledge The Clemente protocols.

Volunteers join us with the understanding that the benefit is contributing to a Latinx centered multi-arts institution, enhancing our guests’ overall experience and learning from a fast-paced arts non-profit environment. From time to time, volunteers may be offered complimentary tickets to select performances and events held at The Clemente based on availability.
