La Greña tells the story of Milagros Unisex Salón, serving the ladies in their Bronx neighborhood for over 15 years. From the niñas to doña’s, the salon has created a safe space for the ladies to unwind. Salón jefa, Milly, takes the lead on employing, supporting, and mentoring her fellow stylist through their inevitable experiences as women. Yet, when their internalized values get challenged, will the ladies let go of the limits placed upon them and and rise to take charge of their lives and refine what it means to be a strong beautiful woman? The audience witnesses the ins and outs of salon life and are invited to the personal lives of everyone in the space through juicy bochinché and cautionary tales the generations share with each other. Following the plot line of salon stylist, Flaca, introduces the challenges in defining what options women get to exercised when placed in the position of motherhood in your early adult life. The guidance of her salon family challenge her at different levels while also encouraging them to reconsider their own position on their experiences.
Julissa Contreras, Dominicana from the Bronx, is the creator / host of the “Ladies Who Bronche” podcast and creator of the YouTube hit “Shit Spanish Girls Say”. She is a storyteller, writer, poet, actor, community builder, and educator. With a focus on storytelling, program development, and community curation, Julissa elevates necessary dialogue through creating connective experiences that create pathways for meaningful change. Recently Julissa’s work has been commissioned and featured in Intar Theater’s MicroTEATRO festival, Atlantic Theater’s African Caribbean Mixfest, Latinx Playwright’s Circle's Greater Good Commision, Harlem 9’s 48 Hours in el Bronx, and SolFest 2021. She is also a featured playwright and actor in the MTA Radio Plays produced at Rattlestick Theater.
