Alas, Almas, Mujeres: Wings, Souls, Women
In the LES Gallery at The Clemente, 107 Suffolk St. NYC
Curated by Kay Gordon
Alas, Almas, Mujeres: Wings, Souls, Women explores themes of interior/public selves, of memory/movement, of belonging/standing out, of sacrifice/freedom, of trauma/reparation - while also cracking open these binaries for new, multi-faceted and multi-dimensional life to emerge. Or, per artist Victoria Restler, “to make work in and around emotion, or sensations that might be ‘seeable but not sayable,’ as visual sociologist Wendy Luttrell suggests”, and/or as artist Valerie Kelemen strives for a “Femino-Futuristic escape to a world of muscular femininity where injustices have been rectified, waste has been integrated, colonialism implodes, and new life thrives”…
This project encompasses the work of a diverse group of women-identified artists. We are Venezuelan, Persian, German, Italian, Italian-American, Israeli-American, Hungarian-Swiss-American, and U.S. born & raised, working in printmaking, sculpture, assemblage, painting, collage. Our community and interdependence have nurtured our work and allowed our flight within and against societal, economic, cultural, and art world demands & expectations, while we also, as Mahbobe Ghods notes, “embody control and loss”.
