Las Islas Interiores consists of three site-specific installations, intervening different spaces inside the Clemente Soto Velez cultural center. In each of them we can observe scenes executed through the use of custom made slide projectors. These five installations are executed simultaneously and continuously. Viewers can move from one installation to another. Although each scene does not have a narrative continuity with the others, the journey from one to another can be linear, consecutive, or random, where each viewer chooses his or her own combination and thus constructs his or her own sense of totality.
The project is presented as an installation composed of multiple micro-spaces installed inside The Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Each of the micro-spaces contains different scenes executed through the use of slide projections, 16mm film and sound instruments. These images and objects give an account of the different characters that could inhabit each of these situations. Through texts projected in each scene the spectators have access to the personal thoughts and stories of those characters. The aim is to create a new form of expanded cinema or expanded theater.
These installations are continuously represented. The spectators are invited to move from one scene to another, discovering them and finding a flow in the stories and thoughts to which they have access. This journey allows them to enter an inner dimension of these characters's lives.
Each of these scenes lasts approximately five minutes: they begin, end and begin again, in the manner of mechanisms. Although each situation does not have a narrative continuity with the others, the journey from one situation to another can be linear, consecutive, or random, where each viewer chooses his or her own combination and thus builds his or her own sense of totality.
