Sobre/mesa is a participatory installation within a larger exhibition organized by LAZO, an artist collective that brings together Latinx artists, curators, scholars, and activists.  The exhibition is centered around a collaborative mail art project and a collection of images transformed through a photocopier, where disparate dining spaces are physically brought together through the tactile process of collage and wallpapered on The Clemente LES Gallery walls.

Sobre/mesa was originally planned to be a group dinner and performance—after being canceled due to Covid, this project transformed into a way to connect the group of artists, from a distance, around the idea of a shared dinner conversation by sharing images of the everyday objects and spaces that have accompanied us during these months. Through shared images of the artists’ home spaces, we will print, collage, and manipulate these originals through a photocopier installed onsite in the gallery to create a large scale wallpaper collage on the gallery walls. There will be a zine-making workshop using prints made from these images, where participants can construct their own zines following various methods.

The exhibition also includes a selection of small works from the participating artists, following the various threads of their studio practices.

Mezcales de Leyenda has generously donated mezcal for the closing event on April 2nd.

Closing event performance by Cumbia River Band Trio: Mary Spencer Knapp - voice & accordion | Andrew Madej - tuba | Martin Vejarano - clarinet & compositions

This exhibition is supported in part by The Clemente, The Cooper Union Grant Program, and The Center for Book Arts.
