Story Time in honor of Pura Belpré pt.2

  • The Clemente Center 107 Suffolk Street New York, NY, 10002 United States (map)

Tuesday, February 16th, 2021

Teatro SEA is happy to join in on the commemoration and celebration of African American History Month. A month where we highlight the achievements by African Americans and recognize their role in U.S. history. On this occasion we bring you Story Time in honor of Pura Belpré, an Afro-Latina trailblazer.

Pura Belpré (1899-1982) was a talented author, collector of folktales, puppeteer and storyteller who wrote and re-interpreted Puerto Rican folk tales. As the first Puerto Rican librarian in the New York Public Library system, could not find any books for kids in Spanish — so she wrote them herself! Pura pioneered many programs for the Latino community and became an advocate instituting bilingual story hours at libraries and left behind a rich literary legacy.

On Tuesday the 16th you will be delighted by two entertaining tales streamed on SEA’s Facebook page as part of their Story Time. And on Tuesday 23rd we will have a special Live Stream hosted by Dr. Manuel Morán, where he and a special guest will talk about Pure Belpré and her legacy!
